Zen Moment!

. One Stroke Color

One of the most satisfying aspects of painting with asian materials is color blending. The goal is to mix color right on the brush, not in a dish or on a palette. The interaction of brush and rice paper makes this possible.

For example, load the brush with water; then layer bits of the following pigments: rattan yellow, indigo,
crimson and black ink. This is what it looks like as the colors begin to mingle on the brush.

As the brush is stroked across the paper, the liquid is pulled right into the absorbent paper and more blending takes place in the paper itself. The result provides color, shading, depth and contour, all in one stroke.

No correcting.
No going over it a second time.
It's a challenge!
